New Headband

I was knitting away on the baby blanket last night while I put Ellie to sleep. When she dropped off, however, her sleep was pretty light. My baby blanket project is in a plastic bag, to keep it clean when I put in my work tote. A very noisy plastic bag. Rather than wake up the kid, I abandoned the blanket in her room for the night.

I'd been thinking about trying to make a simple headband, so I picked up a small ball of yarn left over from Ellie's rainbow hat, and set to work designing one. It was easy and quick, and I enjoyed making something up. I finished binding it off in the car this morning. Now that I've tried it with scrap yarn, I'm going to make some small adjustments to the pattern and knit up a "real" one. I think ribbon yarn would be cool.

For my next project, I'm thinking of making

This shell

This cardigan

This wrap

I lost the cable to my digital camera sometime between Xmas and last week, so I'm hampered in posting too many pics right now. I'll have to ask for the assistance of the other camera owner in our house.

I made a hat this week for the Princess Fairy, adapting a pattern from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I changed the weight of the yarn, the size, and added two stripes of sparkly eyelash yarn. Hippie babies need handknit hats.

Work on the baby blanket continues as well. It's nice to have my knitting project with me in my bag, and I can pull it out on my lunch break, or while riding in the car. I don't knit and drive, this is passenger knitting only.

I need to decide what I want to make next. I'm torn between a lovely dropped stitch scarf/wrap I saw on knitty, or tackling a sweater of some kind.

Some Finished Items

Two of my first projects: (photo removed due to hosting change - will repost soon)

The scarf colors are much more blue/green in natural light. I've frogged that little hat, as it was too small for its intended wearer. I remade a larger one, and will see if I can get my toddler model to sit still for a photo.

I've done a few other small things, including a red cotton potholder (my first original design) and a chenille scarf (my very first project, of which no photos will be forthcoming, for lo, it was ugly and unpleasing to the eye, and will probably be ripped out and reincarnated as a pillow).

Cool site

So far, in my kniternet searching, I really like Check out the pattern archives for a great variety of items.

Knitting in my Sleep

I woke up twice last night thinking about knitting. The first time, I woke up from a sound sleep with the fully-formed thought that if I were to sell some as-yet-unmade things at some hypothetical future date, I could have some items where 15% of the purchase price would be donated to a cancer charity in honor of my great-grandmother. 2:30 in the morning, this is what my brain is doing while I try to sleep.

The second time was around 5:00, and it was much more mundane - an idea for a beaded headband. I don't even know how to bead.

Current Project

I'm working on a Big Bad Baby Blanket from Stitch 'n' Bitch, for a new extended family member expected to make an appearance in May. I chose an easy care acrylic, rather than the wool in the pattern. Since the pattern calls for two strands held together, I am pairing a white strand with a pastel-flecked strand. Pretty traditional baby looking, but nice and soft so far.

I may need to put it down for a few evenings to make a little hat for a certain princess fairy's second birthday. Princess Fairy is moving to Oregon this spring, and head warmth will be important in the Pacific Northwest.

Cast On

I have a new hobby/obsession. Santa brought me some knitting needles, and I am hooked! I learned to knit 25 days ago and I'm already having fantasies about selling my exquisitely crafted handiwork. I'm thinking Hollywood is close by and celebrities are all about paying $700 for a baby hat, right?
